Hathipaon is a sensible alternative to Mussourie. The Banjara Group has a campsite here with luxurious and roomy tents. The location of the campsite affords splendid walks in the surrounding chir and deodhar forests.
Across the campsite a walk up the hillocks leads to an abandoned mansion perched on the edge of the hill, its balcony overlooking the Himalayas. This 130-year-old house was renowned mountaineer George Everest's residence and office. If you're up to it, you can pitch tent and spend the night here.
Another must-visit is Cloud's End. This bungalow, built in 1838 by a British army major was one of the first four buildings in Mussoorie. It is situated at the extreme west of Mussoorie Hill, 2 km from the Banjara camp.
At Mori
Wet and wild is what Mori is all about. The real action is on the banks of the Tons, 6 km upstream at Camp Lunagad. The camp is operational from April to July.
This camp, located at 3500 feet, is run by Aqua Terra Adventures. Rafting can be attempted by anyone above 14 years. All safety measures are taken and even the first-timer will have a blast. Knowing swimming is not a pre-requisite. A run down the river takes around an hour and 45 minutes Besides rafting, there are plenty of walks around camp.
For six months every year, the Himalayan valleys of Kinnaur and Spiti emerge from a thick cloak of snow to reveal a different, secret world to man. Your discovery of the lesser-known Himalayas can begin at the Banjara Camp in the Sangla Valley. At a height of 2,700 mts the Banjara Camp is surrounded by towering mountains on all sides and is set on the banks of the Baspa river that surges through the valley.
Long walks to discover the amazing fauna and flora of the valley, treks to view snow covered Himalayan peaks, angling for trout, experiencing some of the local culture and traditions, rock climbing, rappelling and river crossing are only some of the delights that are on offer.
The Camp is an ideal setting for total relaxation with cosy Swiss-style tents that have attached bathrooms, a well-equipped kitchen and evening bonfires that keep the chill away. There is no experience more calmer and relaxing than sitting around the bonfire, beside the gurgling Baspa river, feeding the senses with the sweet sounds of the fresh mountain air while also feeding the stomach from a scrumptious barbeque.
Best time to visit
The Sangla Valley Camp stays open from April to October. However, temperatures vary with the seasons. May to September have pleasant days (light woolens) and cold nights while April & October have pleasant days. The night temperature may dip to 5 degrees.
